At 21h00, Thursday, 04 February, NSRI Knysna duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the 26 foot yacht Win Win reporting a damaged rudder, with 3 crew onboard, two males aged 61 and 39 and a female, aged 30, from Mossel Bay, sailing from St Francis Bay to Mossel Bay. They had alerted Telkom Maritime Radio Services, requesting assistance, and MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) launched an operation.
The NSRI Knysna sea rescue craft Colorpress Rescuer was launched and the sea rescue craft Jaytee III was activated to stand-by while Colorpress Rescuer negotiated exiting the Knysna Heads. Illuminating flares were used to assist to guide the sea rescue craft through the Knysna Heads. On arrival on the scene, 20 Nautical Miles South East of Knysna all crew were found safe with their yacht requiring a tow.
A tow line was rigged and the yacht was towed to Knysna but not wanting to negotiate a towing operation at night through the Knysna Heads the yacht was anchored outside of the Knysna Heads and the sea rescue craft Jaytee III was again called upon to assist to transfer the 3 crew off their yacht and they were brought safely into Port. The operation ended at around 03h30 and on Friday morning, 05 February, and then at 09h00, the yachts owner was taken to the yacht and NSRI Knysna assisted to get the yacht through the Knysna Heads to the Knysna Harbour where repairs will be affected before she continues on her voyage.
