At 21h50 on Wednesday the 29th of July, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew launched the sea rescue craft EIKOS RESCUER IV to rendezvous with the container vessel SHASTA to patient evacuate an injured sailor.
Earlier in the day, at Midday, NSRI Port Elizabeth were placed on alert by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following a request for medical assistance from SHASTA reporting a 54 year old Filipino sailor on board suffering a laceration to his head and an injured side body suffering blunt trauma sustained in a fall against a hatch.
On arrival on-scene, 2 nautical miles off-shore, the patient was found to be walking wounded and was hoisted off the ship in a harness and taken ashore aboard our sea rescue craft.
The patient has been transported to hospital in a stable condition by EC Government Health EMS ambulance for further treatment.
