At 10h40, Tuesday, 14th April, NSRI Kommetjie duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) reporting a fisherman suffering a suspected heart attack on the local fishing trawler ROOIBERG, 6 nautical miles off-shore of the Slangkop Lighthouse, Kommetjie.
NSRI Kommetjie launched the sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF WINELANDS accompanied by a CMR (Cape Medical Response) paramedic and NSRI Hout Bay were activated to assist and launched the sea rescue craft ALBIE MATTHEWS.
On arrival on-scene the 53 year old man (the skipper of the vessel) from Capri, Fish Hoek, was treated for a suspected stroke. For safety, the man was kept on the fishing trawler, while the paramedic continued medical treatment. The trawler was escorted by the two sea rescue craft to Hout Bay harbour where the man was transferred into a WC Government Health EMS ambulance and transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The man remains in hospital receiving treatment for a stroke.
