At 23h39 on Tuesday, the 23rd of September, NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for medical assistance from the 167 m bulk carrier ANNA M reporting a 41 y/o Turkish sailor to have sustained a fractured left arm (Radius/Ulna fracture) following a fall of approximately 5 meters on board the ship.
Our NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom accompanied by 2 WC Government Health EMS rescue paramedics and responded.
On arrival on-scene, 9 nautical miles off shore, in choppy 1.5 meter swells, NSRI rescue crew and the EMS rescue paramedics boarded the ship and the patient, in a stable condition, was secured into a stretcher and transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to shore where an EMS ambulance transported him to hospital for further treatment.
The ship is sailing from Camaroon to Singapore and the incident appears to have happened a few days ago. The ship headed for Cape Town to arrange for the patient to be evacuated off the ship to hospital.
