PE WaterWise Instructor Marcus Oshry visited Walmer High School last month. Walmer HS is one of the bigger schools in PE’s Walmer Township. This is his report:
“I had an eye opening encounter while I was there, as the township has been very vocal about the local municipality, and there are constantly tires burning and protesting at the entrance to the township. This is where the school is located. I took a chance by going to the school but I went anyway. I managed to pick a week when it was quiet, but what opened my eyes was when I was waiting for the principal to see me on the first day. He came flying into the quad with another teacher, dragging a boy by the scruff of his neck shouting and going crazy. They emptied the boys pockets and school-bag out in front of everyone and out fell bags and bags of drugs. I believe it was Tik.
When it comes to teaching Water Safety one must remember that there are so many other problems out there in these communities … such as drug abuse, rape, drinking, as well as drowning which is the piece of the puzzle that we are trying to fill.
The kids of these townships need serious help in all facets of life and I am glad that Sea Rescue’s WaterWise Academy is able to help in one of these …
