My youngest is hooked on surfing, so sitting at Vic Bay, keeping an eye on my 11 year old, going out in huge swell, with two mean rip currents on either side of the bay, I was not feeling very comfortable. It was not long, when every person in the sea got pulled to the back, and the next minute, Daniel is caught in a rip! I held my breath as the rip ran along the rocks and every wave pushed him closer, Daniel trying to paddle against the rip doing exactly the opposite from what I have taught him, when at last I saw him turn his board and paddling out sideways, I gave a huge sigh of relief! What I have been teaching him had sunk in!
Every time we get to the beach I get them to point out the rips, and I ask them what they should do when get caught in one. I will keep on asking them to point out the rips and what to do when caught in one, even when they say I ask the same questions all the time!
This last month, feedback from the teachers has been so positive, and they really do appreciate what we do. I have not been at a school where a teacher has not told me that they have learned so much.
