Ian Livemore, NSRI Durban duty coxswain, said: “At 07h54 (Saturday, 24th August) NSRI Durban were contacted by Police Search and Rescue reporting a sea turtle trapped in shark nets off-shore of Vetch’s Beach, Durban.
“The Sharks Board were contacted and they requested NSRI’s assistance.
“We launched our sea rescue craft and on arrival on-scene we freed the entrapped sea turtle but it appeared to be lifeless.
“We brought the sea turtle to our sea rescue base and unsure of the situation we applied blankets to the turtle to see if it may warm up but the efforts appeared to be useless.
“The Sharks Board dispatched a member to collect the sea turtle but as he arrived at our sea rescue base the sea turtle began to show signs of life (moving its legs).
“The sea turtle has been transported to uShaka World where marine vets are continuing treatment to try to save the sea turtle and while the sea turtle appears to be recovering it is believed it may only be known in a day or two’s time if the sea turtle will pull through.”
UPDATE: sadly the turtle died later this afternoon.
