All of the money donated to NSRI is spent on rescue equipment, fuel and maintenance. Our donors are invited to earmark their donation for a specific project or their local rescue base.
Head office expenses are funded seperately by our corporate Platinum Partners and interest on investments.
Since our rescue crews are volunteers, we save a salary bill of over R250 million each year.
To keep NSRI ready to respond to an emergency on our waters costs over R25 million in operating costs and around R25m in capital expenditure. It is a hugely expensive operation to run. Our rescue boats and vehicles must be kept in top condition, as invariably they respond to emergencies in the worst weather.
NSRI has an open book policy and our financial statements are freely avilable at any state library.
So how is NSRI funded?
By far the largest contribution (47%) of funds donated to Sea Rescue comes from private individuals, the majority of them through incentivised giving.
Our debit order competition is run from our call centre where a team of dedicated fundraisers sign up members of the public at R25 per month (roughly the price of a six pack of coke). This monthly debit order requires the donor to supply their bank details. Each month their donation will automatically come off their account. It is hassle-free for the donor, but if you are concerned about giving your details to a stranger – you are welcome to call us and verify. Each month we have five lucky winners of R10 000 – and at the end of the year a grand prize of R100 000. To participate call the NSRI Call Centre on 021-430 4701 or send us an email email@example.com
In our other competition … by donating R595 you could win TWO Mitsubishi vehicles. The number of tickets is limited to 28 000, so the odds are stacked in your favour. Second prize is R250,000.00 cash (a quarter of a million Rand) and third prize is a super trip for two on the Queen Mary 2 to South Hampton including return flights valued at over R75,000. To participate, phone the NSRI Call Centre on (021) 430 4702 or send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Our other income comes from interest on our savings, corporate donations, events, legacies, ACSA, trusts, the state, shipping levies and fuel companies. The pie chart below gives a visual synopsis.
