At 05h26 today NSRI Strandfontein and NSRI Simonstown were called out following reports of a yacht run aground near Sunrise Circle, Muizenberg.
Strandfontein launched a Discovery Rescue Runner and Spirit of Grand West CSI and Simonstown launched Spirit of Safmarine III. Sea rescue 4×4 rescue vehicles and the SA Police Services also responded.
On arrival we found the French 15 metre yacht Magoer aground in the surf 50 metres off-shore, and Strandfontein rescue swimmer Clint Abrahams was put aboard the yacht, from the Discovery Rescue Runner.
The solo sailor, Frenchman Jose Pelatz, from Antibes, France, was found safely onboard and in no immediate danger.
The yacht had run aground in the early hours of this morning.
A tow-line was rigged to the yacht and Spirit of Safmarine III attempted unsuccessfully to pull the yacht back out to sea. As there was no danger to the sailors life, he will need to organise a salvage operation with the help of the French Consulate.
The solo yachtsman will stay on his yacht for now and the French Consulate and a local salvage company will assist him further.
