Dave Powell
Captain Dave Powell, one of the longest serving members of the Society of Master Mariners South Africa passed away on Wednesday 9th May 2012.
Dave Powell trained at General Botha after which he went to sea and qualified as a master mariner. He then joined the harbour service. He retired from the harbour service as nautical adviser, based in Johannesburg.
One of his duties as the Master Mariners treasurer was to sign the first cheque ever payed to NSRI, which at that time was known as “ The South African Inshore Sea Rescue Service.”
Captain Powell’s funeral service will be held at St Martins in Bergvliet at 14h30 on Friday 18 May 2012.

My sincere condolences to Dave’s family – I first met Dave through Dave Sievwright, in 1984 and had the pleasure of being taken out on the Vaal Dam waters in Dave’s Yacht sometime in the late 80′s. Strangely enough I’ve thought of him quite a bit recently, especially since David Ian passed away. The latter and I often chatted about Dave and how much he’d done for NSRI. It was thanks to Dave Powell that NSRI first became beneficiaries of the then SA Harbours annual Golf Day which lasted from 1986 to 1996.
RIP Dave, and may the wind always be at your back.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I remember the time you came out with us on Nimbus. I will miss Dave, he was my soul mate.
I hope you are keeping well.
Kind regards.
Joan
